In Ohio, the IRS rule is simple: your vehicle must be picked up by December 31 for you to claim a car-donation tax deduction on this year’s return. With Buckeye Auto Gifts and our charity partner Heritage for the Blind, that means if you call or complete our quick online form by around December 27, we can reliably lock in a Dec 31 pickup slot in most Ohio metro areas. We schedule pickups Monday through Saturday, all year, including Christmas week, and in many cities we can do same-day or next-business-day if you contact us before early afternoon on a weekday.
We’re built for Ohio donors who want a straightforward, last-minute year-end option. Whether you’re in Columbus (Dublin, Westerville, Grove City), Cleveland (Lakewood, Parma, Shaker Heights), Cincinnati (Blue Ash, West Chester, Anderson Township), or anywhere from Toledo to Youngstown, your tow is 100% free and we’ll handle the paperwork with Heritage for the Blind. You just need a properly signed Ohio title, a running or non-running vehicle, and about two minutes to start. If you’re looking at the calendar and wondering what’s still possible this tax year, this is your sign to lock in your pickup today.
Your year-end donation timeline
Confirm you can meet the Dec 31 pickup rule
2 minutesLook at your calendar and make sure you have at least one weekday or Saturday open before or on December 31. In most Ohio metro areas, if you contact us by December 27–28, we can still secure a pickup slot that satisfies the IRS deadline.
Start with a quick call or 2-minute online form
2 minutesCall Buckeye Auto Gifts or submit our simple online form with your contact info, Ohio location, and basic vehicle details. No inspection is needed. Running or not, wrecked, old, or unused, we can usually accept it and start scheduling immediately.
Have your signed Ohio title ready
2 minutesTo finalize your donation for this tax year, you’ll need the vehicle’s Ohio title signed over correctly. Our team will walk you through where to sign and what to bring to the tow. No emissions test or repairs are required—just the title and keys if you have them.
Pick your pickup day and time window
2 minutesOur dispatch works Monday–Saturday, including Christmas week, across Ohio. In Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Dayton and other metros, we can often schedule same-day or next-day if you reach us before early afternoon on a weekday, up to December 31.
Free tow and instant proof of donation
2 minutesThe towing company arrives, quickly verifies the vehicle, and loads it at no cost to you. You’ll receive an initial donation acknowledgment tied to this tax year, because the IRS recognizes the deduction based on the actual pickup date—on or before December 31.
Receive your official tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind
2 minutesAfter Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle, they’ll mail you IRS-compliant paperwork. For donations over certain thresholds, you’ll receive Form 1098-C, which you’ll use with Schedule A when you itemize to claim your federal charitable deduction.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Dec 31 controls which tax year you can claim
For vehicle donations, the key IRS date is when your car is actually picked up or transferred, not when you call. If your Ohio pickup happens on or before December 31, it counts for that calendar year’s federal tax return.
You’ll receive IRS Form 1098-C for larger donations
If the vehicle sells for more than the IRS reporting threshold, Heritage for the Blind will send you Form 1098-C. You attach information from this form to your return when you itemize to substantiate your charitable vehicle donation.
Your deduction is generally the vehicle’s sale price
In most cases, the IRS limits your deduction to the amount the charity actually receives from selling your vehicle, not a pricing guide value. Heritage for the Blind will state this sale amount clearly in your tax receipt or on Form 1098-C.
Itemizing on Schedule A is required for a deduction
To benefit from a car-donation tax break, you must itemize deductions using Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. If you don’t itemize, you won’t see a separate tax savings from your vehicle donation, even though it still helps charity.
30-day written receipt timeline after sale
Once Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle, they generally issue a written acknowledgment within about 30 days of the sale. Keep this receipt with your tax records, as it documents the qualifying charitable donation and the amount you can claim.
