How the car donation process works
Start with a 2-minute form or call
Begin online with Buckeye Auto Gifts by completing the short donation form. It usually takes about two minutes and asks for basic contact information, the vehicle location, and simple details such as year, make, model, and condition. If you would rather speak with someone, you can call Heritage for the Blind directly and start by phone. You do not need to know the vehicle’s value or have every repair detail ready. A car, truck, van, SUV, motorcycle, RV, or boat may be considered, whether it runs or not.
A coordinator calls to schedule free pickup
After your form is submitted, a donation coordinator typically calls back within 1 to 2 business hours. The coordinator confirms the vehicle location, answers your questions, and helps schedule a free tow at a time that works for you. Pickup is available across Ohio, including urban neighborhoods, college areas, suburbs, rural roads, apartment lots, workplaces, and repair shops when access is permitted. You will be told what to have ready, especially the Ohio title and keys if available. There is no towing fee, processing fee, or surprise charge to the donor.
A licensed tow truck picks up the vehicle
In most Ohio metro areas, a licensed tow truck can arrive the same day or the next business day, depending on schedule and access. Donors in places like German Village, Short North, Ohio City, Hyde Park, Kettering, Sylvania, Cuyahoga Falls, and surrounding suburbs can usually choose a convenient pickup window. At pickup, you sign the title over as instructed and remove personal belongings, plates, toll transponders, and insurance documents. The tow driver provides pickup paperwork, then loads the vehicle safely. You do not have to repair, clean, or drive the vehicle anywhere.
The vehicle goes to auction or a parts reseller
Once picked up, the vehicle is transported through the donation processing network to the best available sale channel. Depending on condition, age, location, and demand, it may be offered at auction or sold through a parts reseller. This step is designed to convert the donated vehicle into charitable proceeds while keeping the process hands-off for you. You do not negotiate with buyers, arrange transportation, or manage paperwork after pickup. Buckeye Auto Gifts and Heritage for the Blind coordinate the back-end process so you can donate with confidence.
Sale proceeds support Heritage for the Blind
After the vehicle sells, the proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, EIN 58-2164446. Heritage for the Blind helps fund services and resources for people who are blind or visually impaired. The organization also connects people with benefit information, including SSI, LIHEAP, Medicare Extra Help, Section 8, and other programs. If you or someone you know wants to check potential benefit eligibility, you can visit nhftb.org/finder. Your Ohio vehicle donation becomes a practical way to support that mission without writing a check.
Your tax receipt is mailed after the sale
After the vehicle sells, your tax documentation is prepared and mailed to the address you provided. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind provides IRS Form 1098-C. For vehicles that sell for $500 or under, you receive a written acknowledgment. The full process, from donation start to mailed tax receipt, typically takes about 2 to 6 weeks, depending on pickup timing, sale timing, and mail delivery. Keep your paperwork with your tax records, and ask a tax professional how the donation may apply to your individual return.
